Becoming a motorcycle instructor is a relatively easy thing to do — however, it does require one major ingredient. PASSION. If you don’t enjoy riding your bike, then this is most likely not for you.
Working is, well, sometimes wet and chilly. If you ride then you’ll know what I mean — but it’s not all bad weather. March to October is lovely, and with the UK’s climate change now with us, it’s getting better and better each winter.
Before you take the first step toward becoming a motorcycle instructor, make sure you meet these baseline requirements.
You must have held a full motorcycle licence for no less than 3 years before applying to train as an instructor.
No more than 5 penalty points on your licence. Instructors set the standard for safety.
The single most important ingredient. If you don’t love riding, no training will make this the right fit.
The first part every new rider has to do. A full day of basic training at the end of which you, the trainer, decide whether to pass the trainee or have them return later for more training. If they pass, they can ride a bike up to 125cc (there are power limits for some machines). First-time road riders are typically 16 or 17.
For riders going for a full motorcycle licence. Higher standards, larger bikes, and the income to match. Carried out over two tests — Mod 1 is off-road at a DVSA test centre, Mod 2 is on-road with a DVSA examiner assessing your riding.
Here at Benson Motorcycle Training in Braintree, we’ve had our own training establishment since 1996. Our training ground is a little less than ½ an acre with a classroom, a storage unit for our roughly 17 training bikes, and a dedicated off-road pad.
We’re well established — and we should be after 30 years. We teach about 500 CBT courses each year and more than 100 DAS tests, and we train our own instructors from day one.
We train our own instructors. The pathway to a CBT teaching licence is roughly a 10-week course, with training usually 1 or 2 days each week. Find more time and you can be working in as little as 6 weeks.

We test you for this and once we’re happy, you can be issued a licence to teach and start work
Once teaching, training continues. You’ll eventually sit a 1-day test at a DVSA test centre to be permitted to train under supervision.
A later ½-day test awards your full motorcycle trainer licence — the gold standard.
